The Bush Institute develops programs to dramatically increase the number of American students who graduate high school ready for college or prepared for a good career. Driven by accountability and data, these initiatives challenge the status quo and lead a wide range of partners to share goals and use clear metrics tied to student achievement.

"To build a more hopeful America, we must help our children reach as far as their vision and character can take them."

President George W. Bush

The State of Education

In the current state of education, the United States public school system struggles to stay competitive with other countries in international education. For example, education statistics show American 15-year-olds scored significantly lower on an international math test than compared with students in 17 industrialized countries. Another challenge is school leaders lack the authority and access to create real change and program improvement in this era of education reform. And financially, K–12 spending is the largest proportion of most state budgets and, consequently, under the microscope and facing significant fiscal pressure.

The Bush Institute

The Bush Institute develops educational programs to dramatically increase the number of American public school students who graduate high school ready to begin a college education or prepared for a good career. Driven by accountability, data and school statistics, these education reform initiatives challenge the status quo and lead a wide range of partners and educators to share goals and use clear metrics tied to student achievement and public education.

The Alliance to Reform Education Leadership (AREL)

With education in the United States, leadership is what makes a difference in successful schools. The Bush Institute enhances and empowers the performance of America’s school principals with leadership development as a means to impact student achievement, youth leadership and improve education statistics. Networking innovative training sites across the country, AREL changes the paradigm and leadership definition by which principals are recruited, selected, prepared, certified, empowered and evaluated.

Middle School Matters

Educational researchers have identified middle school as the critical intervention point in public education to keep students on the path to high school graduation. Middle School Matters integrates research based strategies and support tools to assess leadership in school, effective teaching methods, student achievement, academic data and dropout prevention programs to overhaul and reform the traditional middle school model found in American education.
