Advancing the Principles That Shaped a Presidency

During the first eight years of the 21st century, America was tested time and again — at home and abroad.

President Bush was guided in his response to these challenges by the core principles he has held throughout his years of public service and that have guided our Nation since its founding:

  • Improve America's public schools.
  • Foster democracy and support freedom advocates.
  • Save lives through global health programs.
  • Promote free markets and economic growth.

These principles profoundly influenced President Bush’s decisions that:

  • Rallied America in the aftermath of the most devastating attack on our country since Pearl Harbor
  • Liberated millions of people around the world from tyranny and oppressive regimes
  • Inspired new generations of students to reach for higher educational achievements
  • Launched health initiatives in Africa that saved millions of lives
  • Championed faith-based partnerships to give hope to our fellow citizens by reducing poverty and crime

The same principles guided the First Lady's leadership of efforts to improve the lives of millions by:

  • Speaking out for freedom on behalf of women and children around the world
  • Advocating democracy
  • Promoting human rights
  • Championing education and literacy
  • Combating poverty and disease
