AREL Affiliates

The AREL Network of principal preparation sites includes programs at three different points of development and maturity: Exemplary, Operating, and Start-up. We recognize that sites will not always fall within a single stage because of variance within specific program areas and timelines. However, the following descriptions characterize our understanding of sites at each of the three stages of development:

Exemplary Programs

Exemplary programs have demonstrated their effectiveness. They have produced graduates over several years, and they have evidence that program graduates are effective principals who are improving student achievement and sustaining that improvement. Sites at this stage are collecting and sharing data and using it to improve their programs and to inform the development of policy and best practices for preparing principals.

Exemplary programs affiliated with the AREL network are:

Operating Programs

Operating programs are implementing programs that are aligned with the nine AREL standards and they have begun collecting and sharing data about their program and students. Sites at this stage may or may not have produced their first graduates under the AREL program standards.

Start-up Programs

Start-up programs have developed the architecture of their programs that align with the nine AREL standards. Sites at this stage are planning to launch an AREL preparation program, but have not yet recruited or selected candidates for the first cohort.
